Diagnosis and Tests for Insomnia

Tests and Diagnostics for Insomnia

What are the Tests for Insomnia you might use?

In this article, I want to discuss a few things about what to expect from your doctor if you’re finding that it’s pretty much  impossible to get any sleep lately.  Let’s explore what tests for insomnia he or she might try.  If you think that you might be suffering from insomnia then it’s probably a good idea to consult your physician. It’s important that you understand that insomnia isn’t a disease as we would define diseases, so there’s no cures for it.  But with that said, there are solutions.

Probably the most important thing your doctor will want to do is a thorough examination on you and a review of your medications.  The doctor would look for things like thyroid conditions. He or she may also want you to keep a log of your sleep patterns over a period of time.  That might be one or two weeks and after that discuss it with you.  Also, the doctor might likely check to see if perhaps your insomnia is related to or causing any depression or anxiety.

Your doctor understands that if there are any underlying conditions that would cause you to have insomnia it would be possible to diagnose and treat that condition.  By treating the underlying cause, the insomnia can be relieved too. In doctor terms, you can have both a  primary and secondary insomnia.

Primary and Secondary Insomnia

What is the difference you ask? The difference is that with primary insomnia you don’t have a medical condition that causes it.  Secondary insomnia is there because you would have underlying health concern. Sometimes the doctor might refer you to a sleep treatment center for further evaluation.

In a sleep treatment center, they will perform several tests for insomnia while you are there .  You’ll probably be exepected to stay there overnight stay too. They’ll probably conduct a Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), an Actigraphy, a Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), and perhaps a few lab tests.  The lab tests would be to see if there is anything from your medications known to affect your level of alertness.  These things might be stimulants, opiates, or anti-anxiety medicines. This sleep study will help your doctor make a better diagnosis.  That would help him or her to develop a treatment by providing complete information on everything from body position and blood oxygen levels to heart rate and eye movements.

At times, the tests for insomnia will turn up nothing.  It’s possible that you were just suffering from some kind of anxiety.  This could be due to an upcoming event, or it could be that you are depressed over some major issue. Knowing this, your doctor may prescribe medication that could alleviate those problems.  That might just take care of the insomnia. Insomnia is not always a cut and dry issue, sometimes it could take a while to  find out exactly what the problem is. First you’d have to determine if the anxiety is chronic or not.

What is Chronic Insomnia

Chronic means that the insomnia has been present consistently for over a month. Then as I mentioned earlier, the doctors will want to know if the insomnia is primary, secondary, or maybe even idiopathic.  That means that there isn’t any  physical, emotional or mental reason for the insomnia. That is why it is so important to go through the entire medical process to find out why this abnormal sleep pattern is continuing.

As I said before, what makes this situation so delicate, is that insomnia isn’t a disease but it’s a condition.  As such there aren’t any specific tests for insomnia that could give a definitive answer for the cause but instead a series of teats that eliminate one reason after another.

With all that said, before going through all of that, you might find it much easier and more effective to go with a more natural approach such as the one describe in the link below.  Click on the blue image. below.  That will take you to an all natural solution that has proven effective for many people.  The good part about it is that if it doesn’t help, you can always get your money back and go on to the more serious route.
